About LocalMathy

LocalMathy is an Android app for solving math problems with an on-device reasoning model. Users can type a question or take or select a picture of a problem. For an image, an optional vision model can read the problem, after which the recognized text can be edited before solving. The app streams a step-by-step explanation into a collapsible panel and presents a final answer with Markdown and LaTeX mathematical formatting. Boxed answers can be tapped to copy. All inference runs locally on the phone, using the GPU when available and a CPU fallback otherwise. Once the required model is set up, the app works without networking; the supplied description says typed or photographed questions do not leave the device. A local history of questions and answers is optional, and the interface offers light and dark themes. The first setup requires a reasoning model of about 1.9 GB, which can be downloaded or imported as a .litertlm file. The model is stored on the device and only needs to be set up once. Solving from a photo requires a separate optional vision model that can be added later. This makes the initial storage and setup requirements larger than a basic calculator, and performance depends on the phone’s hardware. LocalMathy is designed for working through written math questions and viewing an explanation alongside the result. It does not depend on a cloud account or remote inference service after model setup. The description does not specify which mathematical topics or levels are supported, so the app should not be assumed to replace a specialized computer algebra system or a teacher.
