About Authnkey
Authnkey is an Android credential provider that lets compatible hardware security keys and smartcards be used for passkey authentication. It adds support for entering a key’s PIN and using stored passkeys when signing in, including over NFC or USB. The app also provides controls for managing passkeys saved on a key and setting or changing the key’s PIN. To use it, a user installs the app, enables it in Android settings as a credential provider, and connects a FIDO2-compatible key or smartcard. During sign-in, the device can then work with the credential provider and hardware key to complete passkey authentication. Depending on the key, verification may use a PIN or fingerprint. The management screen can display and delete stored passkeys, giving users a way to review credentials held on the hardware device. Authnkey is designed for people who want to use a physical security key for passkey sign-in on an Android phone. It requires Android 14 or later and a compatible FIDO2 security key or smartcard. The key itself is a required part of the setup; the app is not described as creating passkeys that work independently of hardware. Compatibility depends on having supported hardware and using the Android credential-provider setting.
