Banana Split divides a secret into QR-code shards using Shamir’s Secret Sharing. Users choose how many shards to create and how many are required to reconstruct the secret, then protect it with a passphrase. The app encrypts the secret before splitting it, and each resulting shard is represented as a QR code that can be saved or printed. To restore a secret, users scan the required number of shards and enter the passphrase. The app supports camera and gallery scanning, importing multiple files, and saving shards as PNG or PDF. Passphrases can be entered by the user or generated by the app. The shard format is compatible with a companion web app, so shards created in either version can be used in the other. Banana Split performs cryptography on the device and works offline. It uses scrypt for key derivation and a secret-box encryption scheme, with Shamir splitting over a finite field. The passphrase is needed in addition to the required shard threshold, so it should be kept separately from the shards as the app’s instructions advise. The app is open-source software with no tracking or analytics.
