About Briar
Briar is a messaging app that synchronizes messages directly between users’ devices instead of relying on a central messaging server. When the internet is unavailable, devices can synchronize over Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. When internet access is available, Briar can use Tor to route synchronization. The app is designed for communication where connectivity may change or central infrastructure is unavailable. Briar can be linked to a Briar Mailbox device so encrypted messages can be received while the main phone is offline. When Briar reconnects, it automatically fetches messages from the mailbox. Briar is intended for direct messaging with multiple synchronization paths. Its operation depends on contacts’ devices or a linked mailbox being available, and the available connection method changes between offline local links and online Tor routing. The supplied description does not detail group-chat or attachment features.
