About PaperPhoneLite

PaperPhoneLite is a messaging client for compatible self-hosted onion services. It bundles Tor and supports private and group chats, file attachments, offline data, disappearing messages, and safety-number verification. Optional notifications can be routed through a separate notification service. A compatible server must be set up and maintained by the user; the app does not provide a hosted messaging service. The app is designed to communicate through Tor, but its description states that if it cannot establish a Tor circuit within 20 seconds, it connects directly to request bridge information. That fallback does not travel through Tor, which is an important detail for users evaluating network privacy. The app also supports an optional text-appearance encryption feature that requires unlocking at startup. PaperPhoneLite contains no advertising, analytics, or Google Play services, according to its description. Its privacy and availability depend on the self-hosted server, Tor configuration, and optional notification setup. Users should understand the fallback behavior and the security properties of their server before using it for sensitive conversations.
