About QuorumPony

QuorumPony splits a secret into multiple shares using Shamir’s Secret Sharing. A user chooses a total number of shares and a recovery threshold; any threshold-sized set can reconstruct the original secret, while one fewer share reveals nothing, according to the product description. Secrets can be entered as text or selected from a file. The app supports creating between two and sixteen printable cards. Each share is represented by a QR code and a hand-typeable code using an alphabet designed to avoid confusing similar characters. Users can recover a secret by scanning cards with the camera or entering codes manually. A card-checking feature can verify that a card is intact and belongs to a particular backup without reconstructing the secret. A per-card checksum catches damaged or mistyped data, and an envelope hash verifies that the recovered secret matches the original backup. All cards can be exported together as a PDF for printing. QuorumPony can protect access with an optional biometric or device-credential lock. It works fully offline, requires no account or network permission, and is described as having no analytics. The cryptographic core is open source and is tested against shared cross-implementation vectors. The app is intended for dividing sensitive recovery information among trusted holders or locations, so no single card contains the full secret. Users must still keep enough cards available to meet the chosen threshold and protect the printed shares from disclosure. The threshold can be selected when creating the backup, so the owner decides how many cards are needed for recovery and how many total cards are distributed. This supports different arrangements, such as keeping one card separately while placing the others with trusted people. The app can check a card without reconstructing the underlying secret, helping verify a printed backup while reducing exposure. The typeable code provides an alternative when a camera scan is inconvenient, and the checksum and envelope hash provide separate checks for individual shares and the final recovered value.
