About Where

Where provides real-time location sharing with end-to-end encryption. Location payloads are encrypted on the device using a Double Ratchet protocol before transmission; the server routes encrypted data and cannot read the coordinates. The app uses device-scoped temporary key pairs rather than accounts, and pairwise anonymous routing tokens rather than a social graph. Automated keepalives advance the encryption ratchet even when only one person is sharing, supporting forward secrecy for earlier sessions. The Android build uses MapLibre and Android’s location APIs. Map tiles are fetched from a tile service, which can see the map area being viewed but not the user’s identity or shared location, according to the supplied description. This distinguishes map display requests from encrypted location-sharing payloads. Where is designed for cross-platform location sharing without accounts. Its privacy model still involves network communication: encrypted locations are routed through a server, and map browsing contacts a tile provider. The supplied description explains these separate data flows and the app’s encryption approach.
