About Yggdrasil
Yggdrasil is an Android client for joining the Yggdrasil network, an encrypted IPv6 network that can carry communication between participating nodes. The app provides a VPN-style connection so Android applications can reach services on that network. Yggdrasil can operate over IPv4 transport, so a device does not need an IPv6 internet connection to participate. The connection is scoped to Yggdrasil traffic; the description says ordinary internet traffic continues to use the device’s usual network provider rather than passing through Yggdrasil. The network is self-arranging and is available on multiple platforms, allowing IPv6-capable applications to communicate with other reachable nodes. Yggdrasil is not designed to provide anonymity. Direct peers on the internet can see a device’s IP address and may infer location or identity. Peer discovery on a local network may expose the device’s MAC address, and other nodes may learn some information about its peer connections. Traffic sent through the network is encrypted end to end, but the project has not had an official external security audit, according to the description. The app is useful for accessing services hosted within the Yggdrasil network from Android. It should be understood as a connectivity tool with specific metadata exposure and audit limitations, not as a general-purpose privacy or anonymity VPN.
